Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has admitted that he feels “a bit sorry” for Tottenham Hotspur forward Vincent Janssen.
The Dutchman joined the North London outfit from AZ Alkmaar last season, and he was already up against it knowing that Harry Kane was standing in his way.
There were hopes of a fierce competition between the two forwards given that Kane scooped the Premier League Golden Boot last year and Janssen scored 27 goals in 34 Eredivisie appearances in his final season at AZ.
Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed as the 22-year-old has struggled to make an impact, only scoring five goals in all competitions and only one of them came from open play.
It is clear that he has not massively impressed manager Mauricio Pochettino as he has only started seven Premier League games.
Sutton believes that Janssen arrived at White Hart Lane at a disadvantage due to the consistency prolific Kane, who has netted 19 top-flight goals so far this season.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live:
“He just hasn’t performed. You have to say you feel a bit sorry for him because it is hard to step into Kane’s shoes, but he hasn’t delivered.”
